Gucci SS17 brings us beautiful 80’s retro
chic vibes, with glamour and sophistication. Gucci has its own signature that has always been
brought in every ready-to-wear collection. From luxe fur coats printed in red
phrases, gowns enriched with embroideries
and ruffles, glam fringed coat, jewel-toned turbans, oversized iconic Marmont bag in printed satin, shimmering platforms with
jewels, to slipper platform shoes and other elements with glittering gold and shiny
metallics, this collection is
beyond beautiful with each look put together with Gucci perfection.
The influences
for SS17 Preen included witches, the 1970s, astrology (‘the hex appeal’) and a huge list of more urban themes like Goths and Skinheads. But these inspirations turned into pure magic on the catwalk. You could rattle off a list of the seasonal trends that
the label tapped into: the white dress, the ultra-frill, prints (some actually
pentagrams in this case), asymmetry, monotone, lemon, pale blue and silver,
crop tops, & those flatforms (need). Not that there weren’t individual
pieces that deserve to be called out. The brand moved the popular slashed-knee jean on by offering it in
pure white and trimming the slash in lacey ruffles. Anything that frees us from the standard
slashed jean that currently stands is good news in our book.
The Mother of Pearl SS17 collection is 80s fabublous to a T (possibly a denim one). Basing her designs on the
1989 film New York Stories, three shorts by Martin
Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen, the imagery was inspired by could
not have been anything but extraordinary.
SS17 saw Mother of Pearl’s first foray into denim. Perfect considering the collection’s 80s vibe
& inspiration. I love the denim cocoon coat with pearls set into its
pleated shoulders, teamed with those frilled hem trousers all suggesting the
jean’s key role for Powney’s new season girl.
